SUMMARY:Films at Heart: Mothering Sunday
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nWith Mothering Sunday\, director Eva Husson has created an atmospheric and many layered\, 1920s-set feature based on Graham Swift’s novella.  Adapted by Lady Macbeth screenwriter Alice Birch\, it stars Josh O’Connor as Paul\, an engaged and engaging upper-class fellow having a secret affair with a neighbour’s maid\, Jane Fairchild.  The film flits back and forth between distinct periods in Jane’s life\, a natural-born writer\, beautifully played by Odessa Young.  Janes’s story takes us from her early days in an orphanage\, to her life as a maid in the 1920’s upper-class household\, through her midlife relationship with philosoher Donald ( the brilliant Sope Dirisu)\, and portrayed fleetingley as a successful author in her old age by Glenda Jackson. \n  \nIt’s also a moving depiction of grief from a supporting cast of Oscar-winning heavyweights: Olivia Colman and Colin Firth play a couple who have lost their son in World War I.  She’s silent and miserable\, apart from one heartbreaking outburst; he’s putting on a jovial show and repressing his sadness\, all stiff upper lip.  The event of Mothering Sunday does not feel like a celebration\, however much champagne they drink in the beautiful English countryside.  It’s a sad indictment of a society unable to articulate its grief and sorrow. \n  \nDir. Eva Husson/2021/110 minutes/Certificate 15 \n  \nDoors 7.00 \nFilm 7.30pm \nTickets £5/£6 available from HEART reception and online \n\n \n

SUMMARY:Films at Heart: Ukrainian Film Celebration - Volcano
DESCRIPTION:Ticket profits and donations from this film will go to the DEC appeal for Ukraine\n  \n  \nIt may be that you can’t make it to the film\, but still would like to help the beleagered people of Ukraine. In that case donate through Just Giving and your money will go straight to the appeal. \nThank you for your support. \n  \nhttps://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/filmsatheartvolcano \n  \n  \n \nVolcano is a 2018 Ukrainian-German-Monaco drama film and the feature directorial debut of Roman Bondarchuk.  Through the character of Lukas\, an interpreter who is stranded in the region he was to help monitor for a security organisation\, the film examines the lives of people on the southern Ukrainian steppe who live in anarchic freedom\, seemingly forgotten by the outside world. \nAfter several strange coincidences\, Lukas is confronted with a totally new universe\, in which life seems to be completely detached from any kind of structure.  Despite his initial animosity\, Lukas gets more and more fascinated by his Vova\, as well as by his daughter Marushka – and finally starts his own quest for a long ago lost happiness. \n  \n  \n  \nThe film premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on 1 July 2018 in the East of the West programme.  It won several awards at international film festivals\, including the Grant Prize at festivals in Armenia\, Croatia and Morocco.  The film has been noted for its stunning visuals and a documentary feel attained through cinema verite techniques and the casting of non-actors.  Bondarchuk recieved the Shevchenko National Prize for directing the film. \n  \n2018 \nFilm length 1 hour 47 minutes \nDirector Roman Bondarchuk \nDoors 7.00pm/Talk 7.15/Film 7.30 \n  \nTickets £5 \n  \n \n  \nDonations to DEC Ukraine Appeal will be collected on the night. \n  \n

SUMMARY:FNL: Appel4
DESCRIPTION:Appel4 are a gypsy jazz group from West Yorkshire\, formed several years ago by Gus Bousfield (bass and accordion) and Rob Bromhead (guitar). \nThose attending Appel4 gigs should not expect to only hear the traditional gypsy jazz canon. Much respect is paid to the past\, but the diverse background of the band gives what they play a unique spin. \nHenry Parker (guitar)\, is a highly successful folk guitarist\, singer and writer with 2 critically acclaimed albums to his name. Gus has a background in pop and electronic music and is a successful TV composer. Howard Nash (violin) comes from a classical\, pop and country background and Rob Bromhead is a jazz guitarist. \nAlthough you can expect to hear some standard repertoire – Djangology\, Minor Swing – you’ll also enjoy unique arrangements of familiar melodies and latin jazz – The Beatles\, Chick Corea. As Rob says: “You have a choice whether or not to play ‘in the style of’\, or use all of your musical experiences whilst paying respect to the tradition to create a kind of fusion. We hope that we have succeeded in the latter. \nTickets £5 available from HEART reception or via the ‘Book Now’ button below.
