SUMMARY:FNL: Simple Sessions
DESCRIPTION:FNL: Simple Sessions \nSimple Sessions were initially formed as a recording/video project back in 2019 by bandleader Jon\, mainly as a passion project initially and as a means to bring together some top professional musicians from in and around Leeds/Yorkshire as part of a collaborative project. Having now released 17 tracks worldwide\, the project has gradually started to shift more towards live performances\, whilst still continuing the recording work in the studio. The band performs covers of songs primarily in an Indie Soul/Contemporary R&B style\, by the likes of Emily King\, Kara Marni\, Lianne La Havas and Hiatus Kaiyote\, alongside various other similar artists. \n\nThe acoustic setup features Anna Hattam (vocals)\, Mila Lee (guitar/vocals)\, Jon Melville (piano/vocals) and Steve Hanley (drums/percussion).

SUMMARY:FNL: Elfyn
DESCRIPTION:FNL: Elfyn  \nElfyn is the pseudonym of Leipzig-based singer and musician Theresa Elflein. Elfyn’s music moves between electro- and avant-pop\, sometimes euphoric\, sometimes aggressive\, sometimes even meditative. Vocal tracks are layered and condensed\, ethereal violins merge with synths and beats. Her musical style is inspired by Mitski\, Massive Attack\, Bjork\, and late 90s Madonna. \nThe musician has lived in England for many years and so she absorbed British pop directly at the source\, which you can hear in her music. Her most recent project “anam cara” was released back in January\, which includes a wonderful cover version of the song “Isn’t it a pity” by George Harrison. She is currently undertaking a solo tour of the UK\, which includes a stop in Headingley!

SUMMARY:Talking Heads - Sharon Fargher
DESCRIPTION:Current Trends in Addiction and Recovery\, 24th October \nSharon Fargher: Area Manager of St Anne’s Community Services\, Leeds \nHeld in the Claremont Room at HEART\, Bennett Road\, Headingley. \nEach session starts at 19.30 and finishes at 21.00 – though discussion can continue in the café. \nDonation: £3 but no one turned away for lack of funds \nContact: TalkingHeadsHEART@gmail.com \n  \nThe use and abuse of drugs and alcohol is seldom out of the public eye whether in the media or tv dramas. On the one hand portrayed as cool and exciting\, an essential accompaniment to enjoying music and dance\, at home or abroad. On the other hand\, as an exploitation of the young through county lines\, an adjunct to shoplifting and other crimes\, and disrupting families and relationships including domestic violence.  \nWhen it comes to dealing with the problems associated with drugs and alcohol\, we tend to reach for solutions rooted in abstinence or harm reduction or tacit acceptance and tolerance.  \nThis talk will look at the context and trends of drug and alcohol use locally and nationally and the national and local responses\, including the social\, political and moral frameworks that motivate such responses.  \n  \nTalking Heads at HEART is a monthly event where speakers share their expertise on a wide range of subjects:  economics\, culture\, health / social and international issues. \nWe have had some fascinating presentations. The speakers are often local experts from a particular field and / or drawn from local universities / research departments. There is always time for debate and questions afterwards. \nTalking Heads is a joint initiative between HDT and HEART. We welcome ideas for topics and potential speakers – as well as help in organising the sessions … please get in touch! \nAll are welcome.

Anton Corbijn/1hr 41mins/Certificate 15/B&W/2022 \nWatch Squaring the Circle trailer \n“Celebrated photographer\, creative director and filmmaker Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary SQUARING THE CIRCLE (the story of hipgnosis) tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell\, the creative geniuses behind the iconic album art design studio\, Hipgnosis\, responsible for some of the most recognisable album covers of all time. \nThey formed Hipgnosis in Cambridge during the ferment of the sixties and became rock royalty during the boom time of the seventies. During this period\, record companies didn’t dictate to acts like Peter Gabriel\, Pink Floyd\, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like – Storm and Po did. They made money; they lost money. They did great things; they did silly things. They fell out bitterly; they made up. They never played a note\, but they changed music. \n The film features brand new interviews with Roger Waters\, David Gilmour and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd\, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin\, Paul McCartney\, Peter Gabriel\, Graham Gouldman of 10cc\, Noel Gallagher\, and many more.” Trish D Chetty (writer of this documentary) \nWatch Mark Kermode’s review \nTickets £6.50/£5.50 concessions  \n\n\n \nWe have regular monthly films at Heart on the 2nd Wednesday of the month plus specials including FilmFeast

SUMMARY:Talking Heads: Professor Anna Lawson
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Problems in City Streets for Disabled and Older Pedestrians: Reflections from the Inclusive Public Space Research Project\nAnna Lawson: Professor of Law at the University of Leeds\n  \nThis talk focuses on: \n(1) what features of streets make it difficult for disabled and older pedestrians to get around; and \n(2)The role of law\, especially equality and human rights law\, in addressing these problems. \nIt presents some of the UK-based findings of an international research project\, based at the University of Leeds\, and funded by the European Research Council. \nThe talk begins with a simple overview of international and national law and policy commitments to making city streets more accessible. It then highlights the key types of problem which our UK participants told us about. As part of this\, we will play two short films (one in virtual reality)\, made as part of the Project. We will then reflect on limits to the effectiveness of current law\, including the Equality Act 2010\, in tackling this type of problem\, and on possible reform. The talk will be followed by general discussion and\, if time permits\, an opportunity to view some of our VR films using a head-mounted display. \n  \nHeld in the Claremont Room at HEART\, Bennett Road\, Headingley \nDonation £3 but no one turned away for lack of funds \nContact: talkingheadsHEART@gmail.com \n  \n
