SUMMARY:The HEART Summer Schools Taster Session
DESCRIPTION:This summer we are looking at hosting some summer school classes for 11–16-year-olds\, as a centre we would like to offer more opportunities for that age group to try and learn new things during the summer holidays. We are also getting involved with Leeds 400 this year and using this theme as a springboard for the sessions. We will begin by hosting a free drop-in day on the 27th of May during half term\, in which each activity will run an hour-long taster. \nWhat is it? \n4 different classes focussing on different artistic activities using the backdrop of Leeds 400 as a theme running throughout\, aimed at 11–16-year-olds. They will be on zine making\, movement and dance\, still life drawing\, and DJ skills. Each class will be hosted by a different volunteer who has a background in that area and will host 20 people per class (15 for the dance session). The half term session will inlcude the first 3 of these activites as free drop ins\, between the hours of 11-3 with a break in the middle for lunch. \nWhat to expect?  \nThe first session will be zine making with Blue\, a master’s student studying Illustration at Leeds Arts University. He will take attendees through the process of designing a zine start to finish\, using the backdrop of their favourite places to visit in Leeds\, and what the history behind those places are. He will use examples of zines made in Leeds taken from the zine library at LAU\, as well as pre-making some with prompts ready to be filled out. \nThe second session will be run by Maddie\, a dancer and performer based in Leeds\, who will run different movement activities that interpret historical aspects of Leeds. This will include gentle warm up activities\, working in pairs and creating a movement story together as a group. \nThe third session will be run by Rosie\, a fine art graduate from the University of Leeds\, who runs our monthly art club here at HEART. Rosie is looking to run a session that gives the attendees their first opportunity to draw or paint still life\, as she is able to provide her expertise from studying fine art.

SUMMARY:WNL: Veasey//Ticciati Duo
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Night Live: VEASEY//TICCIATI DUO \nDoor 7pm Music 7.15pm \nVeasey//Ticciati Duo is an improvising piano/drums duo\, presenting a personal blend of contemporary classical music and first wave free jazz (particularly the extended works of Don Cherry). The music on their debut album was written as an exploration of closeness and intimacy. Their relationship with experimental music is founded on these ideas\, as an avenue for connection with both the audience and each other. \nThe way they perform and compose lets them reference whatever musical world they like\, in whatever tone they like\, as well as letting them dig for new ones. They might drift through clattering bursts of noise\, rapturous spiritual jazz-isms and spacious modern chamber music in one sitting. Their hope is that the audience will come away from one of their performances knowing them quite well. \nPhoto credit: Stuart Morgan Hajdukiewicz \nAdvance tickets £8/£7 concessions (students + unwaged) available from HEART reception and online \nOn the Night £10

SUMMARY:TNL: Herbie // Joe Frost - Beaten Track
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Night Live: HERBIE // JOE FROST – Beaten Track \nJoe Frost and I (Herbie) would like to welcome to the first gig of our newest (and coolest) project yet. \nOur long time musical companionship has taken many endeavours in the world of jazz\, hiphop\, funk and so on\, though our latest has taken us on a deep dive into the world of loops\, synths and electronica. \nRecorded at our “home studio”\, AKA: the dining room\, we have been getting lost in layers of electronic sound scapes and drum loops\, whilst trying to keep elements of our more acoustic\, live background. Our aim\, to take the electronic sounds of detroit/chicago house\, brokenbeat and dub\, and mix it with our own\, live jazz approach to our instruments. \nTo bring our music to life\, we will be joined by three of our wonderfully talented friends\, Tom McEwen (guitar + synth)\, Toby Freeman (Synth + Bass) and Reece Soko-Fogg (Percussion) \nPhoto credit: Neal Rylatt \nAdvance Tickets: £8/£7 concession (students + unwaged) available from HEART reception and online \nOn the Night: £10

SUMMARY:TNL/Jazz at HEART: Bridge Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Night Live/Jazz at HEART: BRIDGE QUARTET \nDoors 7pm. Music 7.15pm \nUK tour of the Scandinavian-British Bridge Quartet\, paying tribute to Sonny Rollins’ iconic ‘The Bridge’ record \nInspired by the legendary collaboration between saxophonist Sonny Rollins and guitarist Jim Hall\, a partnership immortalised on their record ‘The Bridge’\, the new Scandinavian-British Bridge Quartet was set up by British guitarist James Girling after he moved to Norway. Bringing together compatriot saxophonist Dave Edge and the formidable young rhythm section of Danish drummer Emil Norman and Norwegian double bassist Andreas Svabø\, this all-Oslo-based quartet establishes a conduit between British and Scandinavian musicians for expressing their shared love of the American modern jazz tradition against a contemporary northern European backdrop. \nBridge Quartet’s debut project pays tribute to Sonny Rollins’ iconic ‘The Bridge’\, played in its entirety alongside gems from Rollins’ following album ‘What’s New’: all recorded within a few months in early 1962 by Rollins’ quartet of Hall\, Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Ben Riley (drums). \nBridge Quartet are touring the UK in July 2026\, returning by popular request after their debut UK tour in 2025 – the same year saxophone colossus Rollins turned 95. \nDave Edge (UK) – tenor sax\, James Girling (UK) – guitar\, Andreas Svabø (NO) – double bass\, Emil Norman (DK) – drums \nAdvance tickets £8/£7 concessions (students + unwaged) available from HEART reception and online . \nOn the Night £10
