SUMMARY:TNL: Serious Sam Barrett\, David Broad and Lewis Pugh
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Night Live: SERIOUS SAM BARRETT\, DAVID BROAD and LEWIS PUGH \nDoors 7pm Music 7.15pm \nSerious Sam Barrett is a hard touring\, folk and country singer/songwriter from Otley\, West Yorkshire. Playing honest\, heartfelt self penned and traditional songs on 12 string guitar and banjo. Raised in the Dales village of Addingham\, Sam began performing in and around Leeds in 2004\, with word spreading further afield with the release of his 2009 debut album Close To Home. Performing at SXSW in Austin\, Texas in 2010\, he has toured the US widely\, usually in the company of friends and fellow skaters The Pine Hill Haints. Along the way\, Sam has shared stages with the likes of Martin Carthy\, Dave Burland\, Katherine Tickell\, Lucero\, The Young Un’s\, Frank Fairfield\, Deer Tick and Karine Polwart\, and received airplay and praise plaudits from the BBC’s Bob Harris\, Marc Riley and Mark Radcliffe as well as Mike Harding. \n“The sustained brilliance of this playing is really something to behold.” Bob Harris\, BBC Radio 2\n“There’s some real swagger to this” Mark Radcliffe BBC Radio 2 Folk show\n“Songs that rattle with the ghosts of Appalachian folk\, and southern blues\, yet sound emphatically English.” Uncut Magazine \nDavid Broad’s playing is seeped in the tradition of American folk and blues guitar\, from the rags of Blind Blake and Reverend Gary Davis\, to the delta blues of Robert Johnson and Charley Patton. He is also an accomplished harmonica player in the country blues tradition of Sonny Boy Williamson I and Sonny Terry.\nHis involvement with the Lindy Hop scene nudged him in the direction of early jazz and swing\, but the standards Louis Armstrong may have sung still posses a rural quality. He cut his teeth playing in country and folk bands and will still play the odd bluegrass number if the feeling takes him.\nHis reworking of traditional songs breathes new life into well worn standards and his original compositions the give a nod to the rootsy side of Bob Dylan\, Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt. \nLewis Pugh is a prolific songwriter influenced by everything from bluegrass\, country and folk through to skiffle and punk. After playing in countless punk and metal bands from age of 12 until 26\, Lewis gradually shifted back to the music of his upbringing. Self-releasing his first solo album in 2017\, he has since released ‘Dark Wheels turn Above Our Heads’ in 2020 and ‘Bullets for Bread’ in 2024\, finding a sound between country\, folk and bluegrass with a distinct political slant. \n“Lewis Pugh is an instinctive country music and rock & roll natural. Authentic & effortless.” Andy Kershaw \nAdvance tickets £8/£7 available from HEART reception and online \nOne the Night £10

SUMMARY:SNL: Duncan McFarlane Band
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Night Live: DUNCAN McFARLANE BAND \nDoors 7pm Music 7.15pm \nThe Award winning Duncan McFarlane Band have gone from strength to strength since forming in 2001\, ostensibly for a one-off pub gig as part of Otley Festival. The original ‘scratch band’ blew the place apart\, the packed house loved it and further bookings were offered. They felt compelled to continue and have never looked back\, with increasing main stage festival appearances over the years at such as Beverley\, Ely\, Sidmouth\, Shrewsbury (dMb have now played those last two twice!) \nTwo decades and many five-star albums later\, they are still built round Duncan’s acoustic & electric guitar work\, his songwriting & Trad arrangements. The powerhouse rhythm section of Nick Pepper (drums) and Martin Ward (bass guitar) are elevated to yet greater heights by Anne Brivonese’s fiddle\, Steve Fairholme’s melodeon and Steve Foster’s electric guitar. \nIn January 2025 the dMb won the public vote at the UK west Coast Folk Festival held in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. \nTheir heady blend of traditional folk and Duncan’s Trad-infused compositions\, with driving rhythm and vibrant energy\, has gone down a storm with festival audiences across the UK – don’t miss ‘em! \n‘Classic folk-rock sound of punchy bass lines and solid\, driving rhythms abound. There’s also a quality of delivery\, vocal authority\, stunning lead riffs\, plus neat accordion and fiddle interplay. A real master class in just how to do the folk-rock thing right!’ – R2 \n‘Absolutely great; Chock full of great stuff\, really powerful playing and singing. He writes some great material that guy and I love their lively versions of traditional folk songs’ – Mike Harding \nThe sort of timeless English folk-rock that’s all too rare these days\, a rocking collection of traditional and original songs with a very English feel – Dirty Linen (USA Folk magazine) \nTICKETS £10 available from HEART reception and online

SUMMARY:Films at HEART: Spanish FilmFeast
DESCRIPTION:Films at HEART Spanish FilmFeast:  Come and celebrate Spain with the film Volver and a delicious vegan paella with saffron\, vegan chorizo\, lots of peas and beans and veggies from HEART’s ABK cafe \nDoors 6pm Food 6.30pm Film: 7.30pm \nDir Pedro Almodóvar/2hr 1min/Certificate 15/Subtitles/2006 \nWatch Volver trailer \nThis dark comedy stars Penelope Cruz\, Carmen Maura and Lola Duenas which revolves around an eccentric family of women from a wind-swept region south of Madrid. Cruz play Raimunda\, a working-class woman forced to go to great lengths to protect her 14-year-old daughter Paula. To top off the family crisis\, her mother Irene returns from the dead to tie up loose ends. \nReviews: \nRotten Tomatoes: Volver catches director Pedro Almodovar and star Penelope Cruz at the peak of their respective powers\, in service of a layered\, thought-provoking film. \nRoger Ebert gave it his highest rating of four\, calling it “enchanting\, gentle\, transgressive” and notes “Almodovar is above all a director who loves women—young\, old\, professional\, amateur\, mothers\, daughters\, granddaughters\, dead\, alive. Here his cheerful plot combines life after death with the concealment of murder\, success in the restaurant business\, the launching of daughters and with completely serendipitous solutions to (almost) everyone’s problems”. \nTickets £12 (includes both food and film) available from HEART reception and online

SUMMARY:TNL: Tir
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Night Live: TIR \nDoors 7pm Music 7.15pm \nTìr was born out of improvisational jams in the breaks of a recording session\, but quickly evolved into a project with its own identity\, rooted in original compositions and a shared musical language. \nThe trio draws inspiration from a broad palette: the spacious Americana lyricism of Bill Frisell to the meditative textures of Nordic jazz pioneers Tord Gustavsen Trio\, Eple Trio\, and e.s.t.\, and the gentle experimentalism of modern folk and ambient traditions. Their music explores themes of home\, longing\, stillness\, and the quiet power of nature—offering listeners a space to reflect\, drift\, and settle. \nBased in Leeds\, Joe Wilkes (bass)\, Felix Bertulis-Webb (piano)\, and Eddie Bowes (drums/guitar) are long-time friends and collaborators whose musical chemistry is grounded in trust\, conversation\, and play. Melodically driven and emotionally open\, Tìr explores improvisation and musical intention\, where every note feels like part of a long\, familiar walk home. \nAdvance tickets £8/£7 concessions available from HEART reception and online \nOn the Night £10
