DESCRIPTION:Struggling single mother\, Anesu\, believes she missed her ‘chance’ at life until her Gogo and her son Tapiwa enter her into auditions for a reality TV cooking show. Inspired by the popular television show Battle of the Chefs Harare\, the first feature film from Zimbabwe’s Mufambanidzo Films is now available to watch on the big screen in Leeds.\n\nThis film became the first to be released in Zimbabwe post-Mugabe era which lasted for nearly 40 years. It received international media attention since its release on the Netflix platform in June 2020 and it is only the second Zimbabwean film to receive international attention after Neria. The film is credited with shattering stereotypes of the Zimbabwean film industry which had been crippled by economic crisis and hyperinflation in the country.\n—-\nThere is food and drink available at the Heart café bar before the screening. There will be music and social time from 6.30pm and the film will start at 7.30pm. The event will finish by 10pm.\n\nThis film is presented by Hyde Park Picture House as part of new African film strand – Seeing Africa! DESCRIPTION:Gather outside 21 Estcourt Avenue at 1.30pm to listen to musician Jem Dobbs\, who lived there for his first nineteen years\, then walk to the nearby HEART Centre in Bennett Road. \n  \nA tribute to the great author\, who in late 1936 worked on his notes for ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’ in Headingley at number 21 Estcourt Avenue where his sister Marjorie Dakin lived. Les Hurst\, Research Officer for the Orwell Society\, an expert on the book\, will talk about it (with readings) and answer questions. Orwell devoted the final section to his idiosyncratic thoughts on Socialism\, and these will be included in any discussions. \nGeorge Orwell (Eric Blair) was researching the terrible living and working conditions amongst poverty-stricken people in Lancashire and Yorkshire during the Depression. In the early part of the year he lived in Wigan\, Sheffield and Barnsley\, and for two short periods in March he worked in Headingley. When the book was published in 1937 by Gollancz as a Left Book Club selection\, its vivid details of the suffering inflicted by poverty shocked most of its readers\, but his views on Socialism caused factional disputes. Today\, of course\, many readers will compare and contrast Orwell’s findings with the situation in Britain today. \nThis event is Headingley LitFest’s contribution to the Leeds Lit Fest 2022. \nPay what you can. DESCRIPTION:Three acclaimed singer/songwriters share the stage. Each has an established pedigree of performing solo\, and with bands. \nWhen they share the stage to sing their own songs\, a kind of magic happens which doesn’t occur in a solo performance! Spontaneous backing vocals and accompaniment break forth\, as well as a fair amount of banter and anecdotes\, and possibly a rousing \, foot-stomping ensemble number at the end. \nThere are currently 4 brothers\, ( with a few waiting in the wings to join!); but you’ll only get 3 in a show . DESCRIPTION:This is warm and welcoming invitation to explore in-the-moment\, collaborative music-making with instruments and voices. \nCalling out to music-makers from any musical background who wish to play\, connect\, experiment and exchange through music\, this event is aimed at people who are comfortable with creating in-the-moment music\, or willing and excited to have a go. All instruments and voices are welcome! \nWe are Liz\, Phoebe and Emma\, three musicians in Brighton\, London and Leeds each inspired by vocal improvisation and Musicians Without Borders principles. After around two years of restriction and isolation\, we want to create spaces for musicians to come together and play\, making music from scratch. \nWe’ll explore games and starting points for leading and shaping in-the-moment music\, finding the sweet balance between conductor-led and individual creative expression. \nOutside any boundaries of genre\, this is an opportunity to try a range of instruments and connect creatively with others. You will have the chance to make stuff up\, lead others\, follow other parts\, harmonise\, experiment with different ways of approaching your instrument\, try new instruments\, co-create conducting language\, play in smaller and larger groups\, listen\, dance\, enjoy\, and more. Jenny Wren and Her Borrowed Wings deliver a jazzed-up bombardment of rootsy musicianship that effortlessly intertwines with their stripped back earthy core. The result; a unique and impassioned sound\, laid bare and beautiful in its honesty.\n\nThe front woman and double bassist\, Jenny Trilsbach\, is the modest centrepiece of the band\, often found at the back of the stage\, it is especially her phenomenal vocals that make this band a special experience. A beautiful and powerful hurricane starts up the moment she begins to sing. Raw and tender\, and full of emotion\, a delicious rough pearl is nestled between her vocal chords that manages to touch the hearts of the listener.\n\nWith their dancing dirt-road guitars\, joining Jenny Trilsbach on her powerhouse vocals and heartbeat double bass\, are the extremely fine; Ben Fisher\, on his butterflonic resophonic guitar\, and Ben Gallon\, on his groove holding\, neck throttling acoustic guitar. Playing their instruments with an intuitive togetherness\, the interesting sound of this trio wins them more friends and fans with each performance.\n\nAcross their four fantastic albums\, the band showcase their mesmerising percussion-free acoustic blues with great song-writing. SUMMARY:Jazz at HEART - Brigitte Beraha's Lucid Dreamers
DESCRIPTION:Jazz at HEART is making it’s return\, this time with the wonderful Brigitte Beraha’s Lucid Dreamers. \nNominee for The Ivors Composer Awards 2021\, Brigitte Beraha’s early incarnation of ‘Lucid Dreamers’ premiered at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall as a trio with George Crowley (Melt Yourself Down\, Yazz Ahmed) and Tim Giles (Nostalgia 77\, Iain Ballamy) in November 2019 as part of the London Jazz Festival\, with music written by Brigitte (Kenny Wheeler\, London Jazz Orchestra)\, inspired by the industrial world that we live in. Now extended to a quartet with Alcyona Mick (Natacha Atlas\, Robin Finker) on piano\, they released their debut album ‘Lucid Dreamers’ on Let Me Out Records in July 2020. This concert is part of an ACE funded 14-date tour\, celebrating the release of their two albums to date\, with ‘Blink’ due for release on 13th May 2022. The original music – with or without lyrics – is both melodic and abstract.
