SUMMARY:SOUNDBITES - Monthly Poetry Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:SOUNDBITES – Monthly Poetry Open Mic Event \nLive in the Assembly Bar + Kitchen! \nReadings by a different local published poet each month and this month it’s CHRIS SINGLETON \nChris is a queer and neurodiverse poet\, play write and Artistic Director of Brave Words (www.bravewords.co.uk). \nHe is currently touring his debut show How To Be a Better Human (“a refreshing message in a likeable\, low-key spoken word show” – Lyn Gardner\, The Stage) off the back of a successful Edinburgh Fringe run with Summerhall (**** – The Wee Review\, Ed Fringe Review). \nIn 2021 Chris’ debut poetry collection The Kidnapping of Self-Kindness was published by Indigo dreams. He was shortlisted for Best Spoken Word Performer and Best Spoken Word\nShow at the Saboteur Awards 2022 for the Birds of Paradise Exceptional Theatre Award and has most recently been shortlisted for the Lancaster Playwriting Prize. \nHis writing has been described as “candid\, unafraid\, harrowing\, startling and compassionate in all the best ways” (Dawn Bauling\, Indigo Dreams). \nChris writes about growing up in a working class Yorkshire town with a strong sense of place and an unerring sense of hope. His poetry covers all the good stuff – grief\, sex\,\nneurodiversity\, underage drinking and poking dead things on the beach. He’d like to be compared to Guy Garvey or Jarvis Cocker\, but he’s probably more of an anxious poetry ewok. \nWe supply the mic – you supply the poetry \nPut your name down for a 5 minute slot (first come\, first served) or just come along and listen. \nOpen mic name listing from 6.30pm \nEvent begins with guest poet at 7.00pm \nEveryone welcome. Free (donation appreciated).

SUMMARY:Headingley Music Festival presents Los Camaradas
DESCRIPTION:Headingley Music Festival presents LOS CAMARADAS at Heart  – a community salsa band\, based in Leeds\, with players from across Yorkshire. \nDoors 7pm Music from 7.15pm \nThe current line-up is about 15 people\, including vocals\, trumpet\, trombones\, flute\, clarinet\, saxes\, bass\, piano\, timbales and other latin percussion.  Band leader and coach is trombonist Jonny Enright. \nAs a band what we love most is the way our audiences respond\, moving to the music\, sometimes with great skill\, sometimes because they just can’t help but get on their feet. \n  \nThe Afro-Cuban rhythms of son montuno are just made for moving your hips. The Colombian dance rhythm of cumbia is infectious. There’s even a song about grinding Venezuelan coffee. \nFeel the tumbao rhythm of the bass guitar and the meaty riffs of the baritone sax. \nClap along with the clave rhythm. Join in and sing the full-harmony coros in response to the passionate solo pregones. \nAppreciate the skill of the trombones\, saxes\, flute\, tres guitar and timbales taking turns at improvised interpretation as the songs develop. \nMany of our tunes were made popular by the Fania All-Stars as skilled musicians moved from Latin America to New York and traditional folk styles became blended with jazz. There are songs by Eddie Palmieri\, Hector Lavoe and Benny More as well as a couple of our own written in Yorkshire. \nMusic from 7.15pm – 9.15pm approx. \nTickets £8/£6 concessions available from Heart reception and online \n\n\n \n \n

SUMMARY:TNL: The Lost Larks
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Night Live: THE LOST LARKS \nDoors 7pm Music from 7.15pm \nThe LOST LARKS originally formed in 2018 just for just one gig: the launch of Patrick’s album “Places to Die For”. But the voices blended so well – one fan likened them to CSNY – and it seemed criminal to stop.  The rehearsals continued\, and with equally-gifted writers on tap\, it made sense to include the best from everyone in the set. \nSo The Lost Larks is really three bands in one\, each featuring a different songwriter\, each of whom makes an equal contribution. Expect rich harmonies\, supported by delicate instrumental interplay – and some utterly wonderful songs. \nThree superb songwriters in stunning harmony.\nPhil Cockerham\, Patrick Hogan\, Den Miller \nMusic from 7.15pm – 9.15pm approx \nTickets £7/£6 available from HEART reception and online
