SUMMARY:Icarus Theatre Collective - The Lesson
DESCRIPTION:Starring Hazel Caulfield\, Jerome Ngonadi\, & Julie Stark\nWritten By Eugène Ionesco\, translation by Donald Watson\n\n\n“50s Absurdism meets 90s in-yer-face apocalypticism.” \nA mild-mannered professor takes on a new pupil\, and swiftly descends into tyranny\, becoming bent on her destruction. \n‍A blistering revival of Icarus’ award-winning dark comedy with a new Creative Captioning process supported by Arts Council England\, for both hearing and deaf/HoH audiences. \nA comically surreal expose about power\, knowledge and those who hoard both. \n\nWatch the trailer here. \nDoors – 7pm \nPerformance starts – 7:30pm \nGeneral Admission – £12 \nConcession/Unwaged – £10 \nTickets can be purchased at HEART reception or via the button below: \n\n\n \nWhat is Creative Captioning?\nNormal captioning uses a surtitle box over the stage that serves no dramatic purpose\, distracts from the story\, and is heavily criticised by the Deaf community as being like “reading a play while watching a play.” \nOur new captioning technology (and indeed the whole design working inconcert) functions almost as an additional character on stage.  The cast interact.  It interacts with them. \nWe don’t just display “Music plays” to describe the score\, but instead musical notes travel along the walls\, moving in ways that allow Deaf/HoH audiences to understand the emotion behind the music and at the same time gives the hearing audience an extra sensory perception of the story. \nWe are also able to enhance words visually the way the cast say them. We don’t need to write a lot of text to describe a town; we can just draw the town onthe chalkboard. \nHearing audiences have responded enthusiastically that our Creative Captioning enhances rather than distracts and Deaf audiences have unanimously said that this type of technology would bring them to the theatre more. \nLearn more here:\nhttps://youtu.be/SKiX-oCiTJE \n‍

Meals will be vegan. Any other specific dietary requirements you are welcome to message us concerning.\nIt is an incredible honour to be able to collaborate with Rainbow Junktion\, an established part of the LS6 community that has been providing community-cafe and food-bank services to local residents on a PAYF basis for a few years. Their bi-weekly (Mondays and Thursdays) cafe has just re-opened and has provided a really important space for locals and students to come together for a meal. Please do give what you can and definitely return during the week for more hearty food.

SUMMARY:Films at Heart: Food and Film - France
DESCRIPTION:Come and join Films at Heart as we celebrate French Food and Film\, with some marvellous food from HEART’s Assembly Bar + Kitchen and the equally marvellous award winning\, neo-noir film LE SAMOURAI. \nStars Alain Delon as Jef Costello\, Francois Perier as Le Commissaire\, Nathalie Delon as Jane Lagrange and Cathy Rosier as Valerie/Caty Rosier. \nJef Costello\, a contract killer with the instincts of a samurai\, is trying to establish an alibi after being identified by witnesses to his killing of the owner of a nightclub. Costello finds himself  trapped between the police and his ruthless employer. \nCritic\, Roger Ebert gave the film four stars out of four in his review\, writing: “Like a painter or a musician\, a filmmaker can suggest complete mastery with just a few strokes. Jean-Pierre Melville involves us in the spell of Le Samourai (1967) before a word is spoken. He does it with light: a cold light\, like dawn on an ugly day. And color: grays and blues. And actions that speak in place of words”\, with Ebert including the film in his collection of “Great Movies” essays \nDir. Jean-Pierre Melville/1hr 45min/Subtitles/Certificate PG/1967 \nLe Samourai trailer \n6.30pm – food \n7.15pm – talk \n7.30pm – film \nTickets £10 available from HEART reception and online (ticket includes food + film) \n\n\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jazz at HEART - Tom Harris Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Tom Harris is a Mancunian pianist\, improviser\, composer\, and educator\, most heavily influenced by Black American Music. \nSince dropping out of formal music education in 2018\, Harris has developed his practice through collaborative work with artists from across the UK\, including Rosie Tee\, Marco Woolf\, and Nishla Smith. During that time he has also established a handful of longer-term projects – voice and piano duo wilkins/harris\, music-driven theatre collective Ulita\, and CANYON\, a multi-media collaboration with drummer Kai Chareunsy which involves creating new work alongside filmmakers\, poets\, dancers\, and visual artists. \nAs somebody who primarily works in collaborative spaces\, Harris has always avoided putting out music in his own name\, or being the leader of a project. However\, after building up an oversized collection of never-played compositions\, he realised that it was finally time to put together a band and share his music. These compositions explore various themes (masculinity\, vulnerability\, joy and more) all filtered through melodies\, grooves\, harmonies\, and textures inspired by his favourite musicians – Cécile McLorin Salvant\, Art Tatum\, Nina Simone\, Esperanza Spalding\, Snowpoet\, Sullivan Fortner\, and lots more… he hopes at least some of these influences are apparent! \nLucy-Anne Daniels – VocalsTom Harris – Piano\nJosh Vadiveloo – Double Bass\nKai Chareunsy – Drums \nSaturday 8th October 2022 \nDoors: 7pm   Music: 7:15-9:15pm approx \nTickets available at HEART reception or via the button below:

SUMMARY:Headingley Music Festival present Mestisa
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to have Mestisa for the last night of the festival – come and join us celebrate this amazing music from South America. \nAlmost 22 years ago Ana Luisa and Barbara met in Leeds at one of the open mic nights at The Grove and they’ve been playing and singing together ever since forming the core of Mestisa. The striking rhythms of their music together with their beautifully melded harmonies are what makes Mestisa very special. Mestisa performs traditional and popular music from Latin America: romantic Boleros\, Argentinian zambas\, Chilean tonadas and lively Bolivian huaynos. They have recently started writing and performing their own original songs\, some of these may well appear in the set. Mestisa have headlined at Filey Folk Festival\, Beverley Folk Festival\, Seven Arts in Leeds\, played at Kendal Calling\, Bridgewater Hall\, Musicport and Chapel Allerton Arts Festivals as well as taking part in several international concert seasons at Leeds University’s Clothworkers Hall. \nListen to Mestisa’s album.\nhttp://mestisa.bandcamp.com/album/mestisa \nhttps://www.facebook.com/MestisaUK/ \nDoors 7.00pm \nMusic from 7.30pm – 9.15pm approx. \nTickets £8/£7 from Heart reception and online
