SUMMARY:Talking Heads: Professor Anna Lawson
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility Problems in City Streets for Disabled and Older Pedestrians: Reflections from the Inclusive Public Space Research Project\nAnna Lawson: Professor of Law at the University of Leeds\n  \nThis talk focuses on: \n(1) what features of streets make it difficult for disabled and older pedestrians to get around; and \n(2)The role of law\, especially equality and human rights law\, in addressing these problems. \nIt presents some of the UK-based findings of an international research project\, based at the University of Leeds\, and funded by the European Research Council. \nThe talk begins with a simple overview of international and national law and policy commitments to making city streets more accessible. It then highlights the key types of problem which our UK participants told us about. As part of this\, we will play two short films (one in virtual reality)\, made as part of the Project. We will then reflect on limits to the effectiveness of current law\, including the Equality Act 2010\, in tackling this type of problem\, and on possible reform. The talk will be followed by general discussion and\, if time permits\, an opportunity to view some of our VR films using a head-mounted display. \n  \nHeld in the Claremont Room at HEART\, Bennett Road\, Headingley \nDonation £3 but no one turned away for lack of funds \nContact: talkingheadsHEART@gmail.com \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Beauty of Being Herd - Solo performance
DESCRIPTION:The Beauty of Being Herd is Ruth’s first solo show\, created with Georgia Murphy and Volcano Theatre. \nAs an ex Samaritan\, her work frequently explores things we find hard to talk about\, but always with humour.\nDo you ever feel like an outsider? Like there’s something people aren’t telling you about the way the world works? Hannah has been studying the rules all her life. She’s desperate to figure out how to fit in but she just doesn’t get it. So she decides to say goodbye to life as she knows it\, and to live instead as a sheep. \nA playful\, tender\, rollercoaster of a show with original songs\, clowning and plenty of facts about sheep. \nAudience quotes:\n“I was smiling from start to finish!”\n“It opened us up to one another and created a sense of connection between the audience.”\n“Brilliant! Go see it! Emotional rollercoaster!” \n  \nTickets from ruthberkoff.com

SUMMARY:TNL: Miles Pillinger Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Night Live: MILES PILLINGER QUINTET \nDoors 7.00pm Music 7.15pm \nJazz drummer MILES PILLINGER has combined his love of jazz and Brazilian music with his energetic but sensitive playing. A recent Leeds conservatoire graduate\, Miles’ playing has deeply matured through living and playing in the musical hub of Leeds. \nMiles is eager to share his original compositions\, along with the compositions of his biggest inspirations\, including\, Hermeto Pascoal\, Wayne Shorter and Joshua Redman\, alongside his band of Leeds all-star musicians: Fergus Quill on bass\, Nico Widdowson on piano\, Olivia Cuttill on trumpet and James Absalom on saxophone. \nMiles has become increasingly inspired by raw\, organic live gigs and recordings and wanted to capture that with his music. His debut EP ‘Sunrise’ which was released earlier this year has already had multiple radio streams including Jazz FM\, being described as “the voice of youth” (Nikki Yeoh) \n  \nAdvance tickets £7/£6 concession available from HEART reception and online \nOTD on the night from 5pm £10/£9 concession
