SUMMARY:Arts @ HEART - Jonathan Hooper & Jane Fielder
DESCRIPTION:Jane Fielder\, Corridor \n14th February – 28th March \nJane is probably Bingley’s best known and most well-loved artist and ran The Gallery for 12 years before handing over to David Starley\, although she remains very much part of the gallery\, curating her own works in ‘Jane’s Room’. Her popular\, generally watercolour\, ‘Janescapes’ portray familiar surroundings and people in full quirkiness and raise many smiles. However\, her talent is far deeper and wider\, working in a variety of media\, and in some surprising places. Crouched on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square or converting cardboard packaging to artworks in Shanghai\, she lets few opportunities pass her by. \n  \nJonathan Hooper\, Cafe \n14th February – 28th of March \nJonathan Hooper is a painter based in Leeds. He grew up in the Chilterns\, and studied at Bucks College of Higher Education\, Falmouth School of Art and Design\, and the University of Leeds. His subject is the built landscape of the city of Leeds\, in particular the residential architecture of the suburbs to its north-west. \nHe was awarded the Milner Prize for an Emerging Artist at the New English Art Club Annual Exhibition 2024\, and was shortlisted for the Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2023. He was one of the five painters in the group exhibition Where We Live which toured England in 2021-23. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Talking Heads: After Grenfell
DESCRIPTION:AFTER GRENFELL; what has actually changed? – Feb 27th \nSpeakers: Pete Apps\, Phil Murphy and Dr Stuart Hodkinson \nHeld in the Claremont Room at HEART\, Bennett Road\, Headingley.\nEach session starts at 19.00 and finishes at 20.30 – though discussion can continue in the café. \nDonation: £3 but no one turned away for lack of funds \nThe Event: \n2025 will mark the 8th anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster that claimed the lives of 72 people. Successive governments have legislated on the auspices of preventing another Grenfell from ever happening again. A public inquiry into the disaster lasting six years has published wide-ranging findings and recommendations. Our speakers will reflect on the root causes of the disaster\, the wider building safety crisis and what has actually changed in policy and practice. \nThe Speakers: \nPete Apps is a freelance journalist focusing on housing. His book\, Show Me the Bodies: How We Let Grenfell Happen (Simon and Schuster 2022) won the Orwell Prize in 2023.\nPhil Murphy is a former firefighter and was the lead technical fire safety author of the government’s Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) Addendum for High Rise Buildings. He is a longstanding campaigner on housing safety.\nDr Stuart Hodkinson is an Associate Professor in Critical Urban Geography at the University of Leeds. His analysis of the devastating impact of neoliberal policies was set out in ‘Safe as Houses: Private Greed\, Political Negligence and Housing Policy After Grenfell (Manchester University Press). He is currently involved in the Manchester Social Housing Commission. \n
