This summer we are looking at hosting some summer school classes for 11–16-year-olds, as a centre we would like to offer more opportunities for that age group to try and learn new things during the summer holidays. We are also getting involved with Leeds 400 this year and using this theme as a springboard for the sessions. We will begin by hosting a free drop-in day on the 27th of May during half term, in which each activity will run an hour-long taster.
What is it?
4 different classes focussing on different artistic activities using the backdrop of Leeds 400 as a theme running throughout, aimed at 11–16-year-olds. They will be on zine making, movement and dance, still life drawing, and DJ skills. Each class will be hosted by a different volunteer who has a background in that area and will host 20 people per class (15 for the dance session). The half term session will inlcude the first 3 of these activites as free drop ins, between the hours of 11-3 with a break in the middle for lunch.
What to expect?
The first session will be zine making with Blue, a master’s student studying Illustration at Leeds Arts University. He will take attendees through the process of designing a zine start to finish, using the backdrop of their favourite places to visit in Leeds, and what the history behind those places are. He will use examples of zines made in Leeds taken from the zine library at LAU, as well as pre-making some with prompts ready to be filled out.
The second session will be run by Maddie, a dancer and performer based in Leeds, who will run different movement activities that interpret historical aspects of Leeds. This will include gentle warm up activities, working in pairs and creating a movement story together as a group.
The third session will be run by Rosie, a fine art graduate from the University of Leeds, who runs our monthly art club here at HEART. Rosie is looking to run a session that gives the attendees their first opportunity to draw or paint still life, as she is able to provide her expertise from studying fine art.
