The use and abuse of drugs and alcohol is seldom out of the public eye whether in the media or tv dramas. On the one hand portrayed as cool and exciting, an essential accompaniment to enjoying music and dance, at home or abroad. On the other hand, as an exploitation of the young through county lines, an adjunct to shoplifting and other crimes, and disrupting families and relationships including domestic violence.
When it comes to dealing with the problems associated with drugs and alcohol, we tend to reach for solutions rooted in abstinence or harm reduction or tacit acceptance and tolerance.
This talk will look at the context and trends of drug and alcohol use locally and nationally and the national and local responses, including the social, political and moral frameworks that motivate such responses.
Talking Heads at HEART is a monthly event where speakers share their expertise on a wide range of subjects: economics, culture, health / social and international issues.
We have had some fascinating presentations. The speakers are often local experts from a particular field and / or drawn from local universities / research departments. There is always time for debate and questions afterwards.
Talking Heads is a joint initiative between HDT and HEART. We welcome ideas for topics and potential speakers – as well as help in organising the sessions … please get in touch!
All are welcome.
