Bench Grafting

Grafting is a method to make or ‘propogate’ new fruit trees, fusing pieces of two different trees together. With grafting, you can be sure of the variety of fruit and the size of the tree.

In this workshop you will learn how grafting works and have a go at creating your own fruit trees.

All participants will get to take away 2 apple trees they have grafted, with the option of grafting more trees for £5 each.

The workshop will cover:

  • Grafting theory
  • How to collect and store scion materials
  • Whip and tongue grafting and saddle grafting techniques
  • Aftercare of the grafted trees

Attendees will learn how to practice safe knife control and cut both components of a whip and tongue graft, as well as use grafting pliers to make a saddle graft.

All equipment and materials will be provided, although you are welcome to bring along some “scion” material – fresh cuttings of last year’s growth from a tree that you would like to propagate.
